Every Christian should be ‘Theotokos’

Icon of the Theotokos “Of the Sign”

In the name of the Father, and of the Son, and of the Holy Spirit.

Theotokos (Greek: Θεοτόκος) means “Mother of God” or “God-bearer”. The title refers to the Virgin Mary whom she brought Jesus to the world. Today, we acknowledge that the term mother of God points solely to the Virgin Mary. However, I reflected that many believers who kept the commandments and hopes in Christ and spread the Gospel are also ‘Theotokos(es)’.

As the Virgin Mary conceived Jesus Christ by the Holy Spirit, we conceived the salvation of Christ by the works of the Holy Spirit. The Holy Spirit dwells in our hearts to seal us in the saving covenant of Christ. He changes us from sinful humans to be born-anew. Thus, we should be thankful as Mary felt great joy after receiving Christ in her life.

As the Virgin Mary conceived Jesus Christ, we as believers conceived the faith and hopes of Christ in our hearts. Christ dwells in our hearts, directing every step and judgement in our daily life. The intimacy between Virgin Mary and Jesus Christ is granted by the Holy Spirit which is given to us. Thus, we should keep this precious intimate relationship with the Lord daily.

As the Virgin Mary bore Jesus Christ to the world, we as believers ‘bore’ the Word (which is Christ) to the world. We should preach the Gospel to the ends of the world. This is the great commission that Christ commanded us. Thus, every Christian should preach the Gospel with great joy in which we respond to the grace of our Lord.

Soli Deo Gloria.

Amen.
